Exercise 13

Avg difficulty 2.5

Let h(x,y,z)h(x,y,z) be a smooth function of three variables and let F⃗=grad(h)=∇h\vF=grad(h)=\nabla{h}.

  1. Write out the component functions of F⃗\vF in terms of partial derivatives of hh.

  2. Write the divergence of F⃗\vF in terms of derivatives of hh.

  3. Is the divergence of F⃗\vF necessarily zero? Explain why or why not.

  4. Calculate curl(F⃗)curl(\vF) in terms of derivatives of hh.

  5. Show that curl(F⃗)=0⃗curl(\vF)=\vec{0}.
