Back to 5.3 Elasticity: Stress and Strain

5.3 Exercise 23

Avg difficulty 2.5

This problem returns to the tightrope walker studied in the reference, who created a tension of 3 . 94 × 10 3 N 3 . \text{94} \times \text{10}^{3} N in a wire making an angle 5.0º \text{5}.\text{0}º below the horizontal with each supporting pole. Calculate how much this tension stretches the steel wire if it was originally 15 m long and 0.50 cm in diameter.
