Back to Solving PDEs with the Laplace transform

Exercise 104

Avg difficulty 2.5

Use the Laplace transform in tt to solve ytt=yxx,−∞<x<∞,t>0,y(x,0)=sin⁡(x),yt(x,0)=0.\begin{aligned} & y_{tt} = y_{xx}, \qquad -\infty < x < \infty, \enspace t > 0,\\ & y(x,0) = \sin(x), \quad y_t(x,0) = 0 . \end{aligned} Assume that yy is bounded. Hint: Note that for any fixed s>0s > 0, esxe^{sx} blows up as x→+∞x \to +\infty and e−sxe^{-sx} blows up as x→−∞x \to -\infty.
