Exercise 15

Avg difficulty 3.0

Let W1,W2W_{1},W_{2} be subspaces of a vector space.

  • Assume that the set S1S_{1} spans W1W_{1}, and that the set S2S_{2} spans W2W_{2}. Can S1∪S2S_{1}\cup S_{2} span W1+W2W_{1}+W_{2}? Must it?

  • Assume that S1S_{1} is a linearly independent subset of W1W_{1} and that S2S_{2} is a linearly independent subset of W2W_{2}. Can S1∪S2S_{1}\cup S_{2} be a linearly independent subset of W1+W2W_{1}+W_{2}? Must it?
