Exercise 23

Avg difficulty 3.0

We can ask about the algebra of the ‘++’ operation.

  • Is it commutative; is W1+W2=W2+W1W_{1}+W_{2}=W_{2}+W_{1}?

  • Is it associative; is (W1+W2)+W3=W1+(W2+W3)(W_{1}+W_{2})+W_{3}=W_{1}+(W_{2}+W_{3})?

  • Let WW be a subspace of some vector space. Show that W+W=WW+W=W.

  • Must there be an identity element, a subspace II such that I+W=W+I=WI+W=W+I=W for all subspaces WW?

  • Does left-cancellation hold: if W1+W2=W1+W3W_{1}+W_{2}=W_{1}+W_{3} then W2=W3W_{2}=W_{3}? Right cancellation?
