Exercise 26

Avg difficulty 3.0

For any vector v⃗\vec{v} in Rn\mathbb{R}^{n} and any permutation σ\sigma of the numbers 11, 22, …, nn (that is, σ\sigma is a rearrangement of those numbers into a new order), define σ(v⃗)\sigma(\vec{v}) to be the vector whose components are vσ(1)v_{\sigma(1)}, vσ(2)v_{\sigma(2)}, …, and vσ(n)v_{\sigma(n)} (where σ(1)\sigma(1) is the first number in the rearrangement, etc.). Now fix v⃗\vec{v} and let VV be the span of {σ(v⃗)∣σ permutes 1, …, n}\{\hskip 1.00006pt\sigma(\vec{v})\mid\text{$\sigma$ permutes $1$, \ldots, $n$}\hskip 1.00006pt\}. What are the possibilities for the dimension of VV?
