Exercise 19

Avg difficulty 3.0

Where f ⁣:V→Wf\colon V\to W is linear, suppose that f(v⃗1)=w⃗1f(\vec{v}_{1})=\vec{w}_{1}, …, f(v⃗n)=w⃗nf(\vec{v}_{n})=\vec{w}_{n} for some vectors w⃗1\vec{w}_{1}, …, w⃗n\vec{w}_{n} from WW.

  • If the set of w⃗ \vec{w}\,’s is independent, must the set of v⃗ \vec{v}\,’s also be independent?

  • If the set of v⃗ \vec{v}\,’s is independent, must the set of w⃗ \vec{w}\,’s also be independent?

  • If the set of w⃗ \vec{w}\,’s spans WW, must the set of v⃗ \vec{v}\,’s span VV?

  • If the set of v⃗ \vec{v}\,’s spans VV, must the set of w⃗ \vec{w}\,’s span WW?
