Exercise 20

Avg difficulty 3.0

Prove that the image of a span equals the span of the images. That is, where h ⁣:V→Wh\colon V\to W is linear, prove that if SS is a subset of VV then h([S])h([S]) equals [h(S)][h(S)]. This generalizes Lemma 2.1 since it shows that if UU is any subspace of VV then its image {h(u⃗)∣u⃗∈U}\{\hskip 1.00006pth(\vec{u})\mid\vec{u}\in U\hskip 1.00006pt\} is a subspace of WW, because the span of the set UU is UU.
