Exercise 16

Avg difficulty 3.0

Suppose that h ⁣:V→Wh\colon V\to W is one-to-one so that by Theorem 2.20, for any basis B=⟨β⃗1,…,β⃗n⟩⊂VB=\langle\vec{\beta}_{1},\dots,\vec{\beta}_{n}\rangle\subset V the image h(B)=⟨h(β⃗1),…,h(β⃗n)⟩h(B)=\langle h(\vec{\beta}_{1}),\dots,h(\vec{\beta}_{n})\rangle is a basis for h(V)h(V). (If hh is onto then h(V)=Wh(V)=W.)

  • Represent the map hh with respect to ⟨B,h(B)⟩\langle B,h(B)\rangle.

  • For a member v⃗\vec{v} of the domain, where the representation of v⃗\vec{v} has components c1c_{1}, …, cnc_{n}, represent the image vector h(v⃗)h(\vec{v}) with respect to the image basis h(B)h(B).
