Exercise 10

Avg difficulty 3.0

A square matrix is symmetric if each i,ji,j entry equals the j,ij,i entry, that is, if the matrix equals its transpose.

  • Prove that for any square HH, the matrix H+HTH+{{H}^{\mathsf{T}}} is symmetric. Does every symmetric matrix have this form?

  • Prove that the set of n ⁣× ⁣nn\!\times\!n symmetric matrices is a subspace of Mn ⁣× ⁣n\mathcal{M}_{n\!\times\!n}.
