Exercise 4

Avg difficulty 3.0

Prove each, assuming that the operations are defined, where GG, HH, and JJ are matrices, where ZZ is the zero matrix, and where rr and ss are scalars.

  • Matrix addition is commutative G+H=H+GG+H=H+G.

  • Matrix addition is associative G+(H+J)=(G+H)+JG+(H+J)=(G+H)+J.

  • The zero matrix is an additive identity G+Z=GG+Z=G.

  • 0⋅G=Z0\cdot G=Z

  • (r+s)G=rG+sG(r+s)G=rG+sG

  • Matrices have an additive inverse G+(−1)⋅G=ZG+(-1)\cdot G=Z.

  • r(G+H)=rG+rHr(G+H)=rG+rH

  • (rs)G=r(sG)(rs)G=r(sG)
