Exercise 9

Avg difficulty 3.0

For any permutation ϕ\phi let g(ϕ)g(\phi) be the integer defined in this way.

g(ϕ)=∏i<j[ϕ(j)−ϕ(i)]g(\phi)=\prod_{i<j}[\phi(j)-\phi(i)]

(This is the product, over all indices ii and jj with i<ji<j, of terms of the given form.)

  • Compute the value of gg on all 22-permutations.

  • Compute the value of gg on all 33-permutations.

  • Prove that g(ϕ)g(\phi) is not 00.

  • Prove this.

    sgn⁡(ϕ)=g(ϕ)∣g(ϕ)∣\operatorname{sgn}(\phi)=\frac{g(\phi)}{\lvert g(\phi)\rvert}

Many authors give this formula as the definition of the signum function.
