Exercise 1.4.29

Avg difficulty 3.0

State whether each of the following sets of data is possible for a system of equations. If possible, describe the solution set. That is, indicate whether there exists a unique solution, no solution or infinitely many solutions. Here, AA is the coefficient matrix, and [A∣B]\left[A\mid B\right] denotes the augmented matrix of the system.

  1. AA is a 5×65\times 6-matrix, rank⁡(A)=4\operatorname{rank}(A)=4 and rank⁡[A∣B]=4\operatorname{rank}\left[A\mid B\right]=4.

  2. AA is a 3×43\times 4-matrix, rank⁡(A)=3\operatorname{rank}(A)=3 and rank⁡[A∣B]=2\operatorname{rank}\left[A\mid B\right]=2.

  3. AA is a 4×24\times 2-matrix, rank⁡(A)=4\operatorname{rank}(A)=4 and rank⁡[A∣B]=4\operatorname{rank}\left[A\mid B\right]=4.

  4. AA is a 5×55\times 5-matrix, rank⁡(A)=4\operatorname{rank}(A)=4 and rank⁡[A∣B]=5\operatorname{rank}\left[A\mid B\right]=5.

  5. AA is a 4×24\times 2-matrix, rank⁡(A)=2\operatorname{rank}(A)=2 and rank⁡[A∣B]=2\operatorname{rank}\left[A\mid B\right]=2.
