Exercise 10.4.9

Avg difficulty 3.0

Suppose that VV and WW are finite-dimensional vector spaces with bases BB and CC, respectively. Let T:V→WT:V\to W be a linear transformation such that

T(vi)=wiT(\mathbf{v}_{i})=\mathbf{w}_{i}

for i=1,…,ni=1,\ldots,n. Let MM be the matrix whose columns are [v1]B,…,[vn]B\left[\mathbf{v}_{1}\right]_{B},\ldots,\left[\mathbf{v}_{n}\right]_{B}, and let NN be the matrix whose columns are [w1]C,…,[wn]C\left[\mathbf{w}_{1}\right]_{C},\ldots,\left[\mathbf{w}_{n}\right]_{C}. Suppose that MM is invertible. Show that [T]C,B=NM−1\left[T\right]_{C,B}=NM^{-1}.
