Back to Column space, row space, and null space of a matrix

Exercise 5.5.8

Avg difficulty 3.0

Suppose AA is an m×nm\times n-matrix and BB is an n×pn\times p-matrix. Show that

nullity⁡(AB)≤nullity⁡(A)+nullity⁡(B).\operatorname{nullity}(AB)\leq\operatorname{nullity}(A)+\operatorname{nullity}(B).

Hint: Consider the subspace col⁡(B)∩null⁡(A)\operatorname{col}(B)\cap\operatorname{null}(A) and suppose a basis for this subspace is {w1,…,wk}\left\{\mathbf{w}_{1},\ldots,\mathbf{w}_{k}\right\}. Let {z1,…,zk}\left\{\mathbf{z}_{1},\ldots,\mathbf{z}_{k}\right\} be such that Bzi=wiB\mathbf{z}_{i}=\mathbf{w}_{i}. Now suppose {u1,…,ur}\left\{\mathbf{u}_{1},\ldots,\mathbf{u}_{r}\right\} is a basis for null⁡(B)\operatorname{null}(B), and argue that null⁡(AB)⊆span⁡{u1,…,ur,z1,…,zk}\operatorname{null}(AB)\subseteq\operatorname{span}\left\{\mathbf{u}_{1},\ldots,\mathbf{u}_{r},\mathbf{z}_{1},\ldots,\mathbf{z}_{k}\right\}.
