Problem 7

Avg difficulty 3.0

Let the function f:N2→Nf:\mathbb{N}^{2}\to\mathbb{N} be defined such that

f(m,n)={nif m=1mif n=1f(n−1,f(n−1,m−1))otherwisef(m,n)=\begin{cases}n&\text{if }m=1\\ m&\text{if }n=1\\ f\left(n-1,f(n-1,m-1)\right)&\text{otherwise}\end{cases}

Prove that

  1. f(n,2)=n−1f(n,2)=n-1 for all integers n>1n>1;

  2. f(n+1,n)=2f(n+1,n)=2 for all positive integers nn; and

  3. f(n,4)=2f(n,4)=2 for all integers n>1n>1.
