Avg difficulty 3.0

Let GG be an abelian group.

  1. Prove that Gn={xn∣x∈G}G^{n}=\{x^{n}\mid x\in G\}, where nn is a positive integer, is a subgroup of GG.

  2. Suppose also that GG is finite and pp is a prime that divides ∣G∣|G|. Using the map ϕ:G→Gp\phi:G\to G^{p} where ϕ(x)=xp\phi(x)=x^{p}, prove that GpG^{p} is a proper subgroup of GG.(Hint: consider Cauchy’s theorem (1.31).)
