Problem 1

Avg difficulty 3.0

Consider the Klein four-group V\mathrm{V} with presentation

⟨a,b∣a2=b2=(ab)2=e⟩.\langle a,b\mid a^{2}=b^{2}=(ab)^{2}=e\rangle.

Recall that V≅(Z2)2\mathrm{V}\cong(\mathbb{Z}_{2})^{2}.

  1. Find the unique composition series for V\mathrm{V} up to isomorphism.

  2. Let Q\mathrm{Q} denote the quaternion group. Find the two distinct composition series for Q\mathrm{Q} up to isomorphism.(Hint: consider the alternate definition of the quaternion group.)

  3. Let HH be the subgroup of Q\mathrm{Q} that is isomorphic to C4\mathrm{C}_{4}, and KK be a subgroup of Q\mathrm{Q} that is isomorphic to V\mathrm{V}. Prove that

    Q/H≅Q/K.\mathrm{Q}/H\cong\mathrm{Q}/K.

    (Hint: consider 1.4.)
