Problem 4

Avg difficulty 3.0

Let GG be a cyclic group of order nn with generator gg.

  1. Suppose the maps f1:G→Gf_{1}:G\to G and f2:G→Gf_{2}:G\to G are homomorphisms. Prove that f1=f2f_{1}=f_{2} if and only if f1(g)=f2(g)f_{1}(g)=f_{2}(g).

  2. Let the map f:G→Gf:G\to G be a homomorphism. Explain why f(g)=gmff(g)=g^{m_{f}} for some mf∈Znm_{f}\in\mathbb{Z}_{n}.

  3. Show that the mfm_{f} obtained in (ii) is unique to ff.

  4. Suppose the functions f1:G→Gf_{1}:G\to G and f2:G→Gf_{2}:G\to G are homomorphisms. Prove that

    mf1∘f2=mf1⊗nmf2m_{f_{1}\circ f_{2}}=m_{f_{1}}\otimes_{n}m_{f_{2}}

    where ∘\circ denotes function composition and ⊗n\otimes_{n} denotes multiplication modulo nn.

  5. Let the function f:G→Gf:G\to G be a homomorphism. Prove that ff is an automorphism if and only if mfm_{f} has a multiplicative inverse modulo nn. That is, there exists k∈Unk\in\mathcal{U}_{n} such that mfk≡1(modn)m_{f}k\equiv 1\pmod{n} if and only if ff is an automorphism.(Hint: an exercise given elsewhere in the book states that ab≡1(modm)ab\equiv 1\pmod{m} if and only if gcd⁡(a,m)=1\gcd(a,m)=1.)

  6. Hence, by considering the map ϕ:Aut(G)→Un\phi:\mathrm{Aut}(G)\to\mathcal{U}_{n} where ϕ(f)=mf\phi(f)=m_{f}, prove that

    Aut(G)≅Un.\mathrm{Aut}(G)\cong\mathcal{U}_{n}.
