Exercise 9

Avg difficulty 3.0

Let p(x)=x2+2p(x)=x^{2}+2, f(x)=2x+3f(x)=2x+3, and g(x)=4x2+3x+2g(x)=4x^{2}+3x+2 be polynomials in Z5[x]\mathbb{Z}_{5}[x].

  1. Show that p(x)p(x) is irreducible over Z5\mathbb{Z}_{5}.

  2. Hence construct a field, FF, of 25 elements.

  3. Let I=⟨p(x)⟩I=\left\langle p(x)\right\rangle be an ideal of FF. Simplify the following cosets.

    1. (f(x)+I)+(g(x)+I)(f(x)+I)+(g(x)+I)

    2. (f(x)+I)(g(x)+I)(f(x)+I)(g(x)+I)
