Problem 5

Avg difficulty 3.0

Let I={f(x)∈Z[x]∣f(−2)=0}I=\{f(x)\in\mathbb{Z}[x]\mid f(-2)=0\} be a subset of Z[x]\mathbb{Z}[x]. Consider the homomorphism ϕ:Z[x]→Z\phi:\mathbb{Z}[x]\to\mathbb{Z} where ϕ(f(x))=f(−2)\phi(f(x))=f(-2) for all f(x)∈Z[x]f(x)\in\mathbb{Z}[x].

  1. Show that II is an ideal of Z[x]\mathbb{Z}[x].

  2. Hence determine if the ideal II is prime, maximal, or both.
