Problem 10

Avg difficulty 3.0

Let FF be a field and f(x)f(x) is a non-constant polynomial in F[x]F[x] with degree nn. Let EE be the splitting field of f(x)f(x) over FF.

  1. By considering the binomial coefficient (a+ba){a+b\choose a}, explain why a!b!a!b! divides (a+b)!(a+b)! for all non-negative integers aa and bb.

  2. Prove that [E:F][E:F] divides n!n!.(Hint: use strong induction on nn; break into two cases, where f(x)f(x) is irreducible or f(x)f(x) is reducible.)
