Problem 7

Avg difficulty 3.0

Let FF be a field and EE be an extension field of FF.

  1. Let a0,a1,…,an∈Ea_{0},a_{1},\dots,a_{n}\in E be algebraic over FF. Prove that the zero(es) of the polynomial

    f(x)=a0+a1x+a2x2+⋯+anxnf(x)=a_{0}+a_{1}x+a_{2}x^{2}+\cdots+a_{n}x^{n}

    are also algebraic over FF.

  2. Deduce that if α\alpha and β\beta are both transcendental over FF, then either α+β\alpha+\beta or αβ\alpha\beta is also transcendental.
