Problem 8

Avg difficulty 3.0

Let FF be a finite field with characteristic pp, a prime.

  1. Explain why pp divides ∣F∣|F|.

  2. Suppose qq is another prime dividing ∣F∣|F|. Show there exist integers λ\lambda and μ\mu such that (λp+μq)x=x(\lambda p+\mu q)x=x for all elements x∈Fx\in F.

  3. Deduce that the supposition in (ii) leads to a contradiction. Hence explain why ∣F∣|F| must have order pnp^{n}, where nn is a positive integer.
