Problem 2

Avg difficulty 3.0

Let α\alpha be a zero of x3+x2+1x^{3}+x^{2}+1 in some extension field of Z2\mathbb{Z}_{2}.

  1. Find (α2+α+1)−1(\alpha^{2}+\alpha+1)^{-1} in Z2(α)\mathbb{Z}_{2}(\alpha).

  2. Hence solve the equation

    (α2+α+1)x+α2=α(\alpha^{2}+\alpha+1)x+\alpha^{2}=\alpha

    for xx over Z2(α)\mathbb{Z}_{2}(\alpha).

(Hint: refer to the conversion formulae given in 1.7.)
