Problem 5

Avg difficulty 3.0

Let p(x)=x3+2x+2∈Z3[x]p(x)=x^{3}+2x+2\in\mathbb{Z}_{3}[x].

  1. Show that p(x)p(x) is irreducible over Z3\mathbb{Z}_{3}.

  2. Let α\alpha be a zero of p(x)p(x) in the field F=Z3[x]/⟨p(x)⟩F=\mathbb{Z}_{3}[x]/\left\langle p(x)\right\rangle. Show that α\alpha is not a generator of F∗F^{\ast}.

  3. Find a generator of F∗F^{\ast}, and prove that your answer is indeed a generator of F∗F^{\ast}. Express your answer in terms of α\alpha.
