Problem 3

Avg difficulty 3.0

Let V=R4V=\mathbb{R}^{4} be a vector space over R\mathbb{R}.

  1. Let the set

    R={(a,b,c,d)∈V∣a+b+c+d=1}.R=\{(a,b,c,d)\in V\mid a+b+c+d=1\}.

    Show that RR is not a subspace of VV.

  2. Let the set

    S={(a,b,c,d)∈V∣a+b+c+d=0}.S=\{(a,b,c,d)\in V\mid a+b+c+d=0\}.

    Show that SS is a subspace of VV. Find a basis for SS and hence state the value of dim⁡(S)\dim(S).
