Problem 5

Avg difficulty 3.0

The analogue of a group/ring homomorphism for vector spaces is called a linear transformation. If VV and WW are vector spaces over a field FF, then the map T:V→WT:V\to W is a linear transformation if it preserves vector addition and scalar multiplication, that is,

T(u+v)\displaystyle T(\mathbf{u}+\mathbf{v}) =T(u)+T(v) and\displaystyle=T(\mathbf{u})+T(\mathbf{v})\text{ and} T(αu)\displaystyle T(\alpha\mathbf{u}) =αT(u)\displaystyle=\alpha T(\mathbf{u})

for all u,v∈V\mathbf{u},\mathbf{v}\in V and α∈F\alpha\in F.

To prove that two vector spaces are isomorphic, one needs to find a bijective linear transformation.

With this information, prove 1.35.
