Activity 2.2.2

Avg difficulty 2.5
  1. Find the matrix product [120−124−3−2−1−261][31−11]\left[ \begin{array}{rrrr} 1 & 2 & 0 & -1 \\ 2 & 4 & -3 & -2 \\ -1 & -2 & 6 & 1 \\ \end{array} \right] \left[ \begin{array}{r} 3 \\ 1 \\ -1 \\ 1 \\ \end{array} \right].

  2. Suppose that AA is the matrix [3−100−24215103]\left[ \begin{array}{rrr} 3 & -1 & 0 \\ 0 & -2 & 4 \\ 2 & 1 & 5 \\ 1 & 0 & 3 \\ \end{array} \right]. If AxA\xvec is defined, what is the dimension of the vector x\xvec and what is the dimension of AxA\xvec?

  3. A vector whose entries are all zero is denoted by 0\zerovec. If AA is a matrix, what is the product A0A\zerovec?

  4. Suppose that I=[100010001]I = \left[\begin{array}{rrr} 1 & 0 & 0 \\ 0 & 1 & 0 \\ 0 & 0 & 1 \\ \end{array}\right] is the identity matrix and x=[x1x2x3]\xvec=\threevec{x_1}{x_2}{x_3}. Find the product IxI\xvec and explain why II is called the identity matrix.

  5. Suppose we write the matrix AA in terms of its columns as A=[v1v2⋯vn]A = \left[ \begin{array}{rrrr} \vvec_1 & \vvec_2 & \cdots & \vvec_n \\ \end{array} \right]. If the vector e1=[10⋮0]\evec_1 = \left[\begin{array}{c} 1 \\ 0 \\ \vdots \\ 0 \end{array}\right], what is the product Ae1A\evec_1?

  6. Suppose that A=[12−11],b=[60]A = \left[ \begin{array}{rrrr} 1 & 2 \\ -1 & 1 \\ \end{array} \right], \bvec = \left[ \begin{array}{r} 6 \\ 0 \end{array} \right]. Is there a vector x\xvec such that Ax=bA\xvec = \bvec?
