Exercise 5

Avg difficulty 2.5

Determine whether the following statements are true or false and provide a justification for your response. Throughout, we will assume that the matrix AA has columns v1,v2,…,vn\vvec_1,\vvec_2,\ldots,\vvec_n; that is, A=[v1v2…vn]A = \left[\begin{array}{rrrr} \vvec_1&\vvec_2&\ldots&\vvec_n \end{array}\right].

  1. If the equation Ax=bA\xvec = \bvec is consistent, then b\bvec is in Span{v1,v2,…,vn}\laspan{\vvec_1,\vvec_2,\ldots,\vvec_n}.

  2. The equation Ax=v1A\xvec = \vvec_1 is consistent.

  3. If v1\vvec_1, v2\vvec_2, v3\vvec_3, and v4\vvec_4 are vectors in R3\real^3, then their span is R3\real^3.

  4. If b\bvec is a linear combination of v1,v2,…,vn\vvec_1, \vvec_2,\ldots,\vvec_n, then b\bvec is in Span{v1,v2,…,vn}\laspan{\vvec_1,\vvec_2,\ldots,\vvec_n}.

  5. If AA is an 8032×4278032\times 427 matrix, then the span of the columns of AA is a set of vectors in R427\real^{427}.
