Exercise 2

Avg difficulty 2.5

Consider the vectors v1=[2−10],v2=[121],v3=[2−23]\vvec_1 = \threevec{2}{-1}{0}, \vvec_2 = \threevec{1}{2}{1}, \vvec_3 = \threevec{2}{-2}{3}.

  1. Are these vectors linearly independent or linearly dependent?

  2. Describe the Span{v1,v2,v3}\laspan{\vvec_1,\vvec_2,\vvec_3}.

  3. Suppose that b\bvec is a vector in R3\real^3. Explain why we can guarantee that b\bvec may be written as a linear combination of v1\vvec_1, v2\vvec_2, and v3\vvec_3.

  4. Suppose that b\bvec is a vector in R3\real^3. In how many ways can b\bvec be written as a linear combination of v1\vvec_1, v2\vvec_2, and v3\vvec_3?
