Suppose that AA is an n×nn\times n matrix.

  1. Explain why λ=0\lambda = 0 is an eigenvalue of AA if and only if there is a nonzero solution to the homogeneous equation Ax=0A\xvec = 0.

  2. Explain why AA is not invertible if and only if λ=0\lambda=0 is an eigenvalue.

  3. If v\vvec is an eigenvector of AA having associated eigenvalue λ\lambda, explain why v\vvec is also an eigenvector of A2A^2 with associated eigenvalue λ2\lambda^2.

  4. If AA is invertible and v\vvec is eigenvector of AA having associated eigenvalue λ\lambda, explain why v\vvec is also an eigenvector of A−1A^{-1} with associated eigenvalue λ−1\lambda^{-1}.

  5. The matrix A= [1221]A=\ \left[\begin{array}{rr} 1 & 2 \\ 2 & 1 \\ \end{array}\right] has eigenvectors v1=[11]\vvec_1=\twovec{1}{1} and v2=[−11]\vvec_2=\twovec{-1}{1} and associated eigenvalues λ1=3\lambda_1 = 3 and λ=−1\lambda=-1. What are some eigenvectors and associated eigenvalues for A5A^5?
