Exercise 4

Avg difficulty 2.5

Consider the matrices A=[32−5−3],B=[57−3−4].A = \left[\begin{array}{cc} 3 & 2 \\ -5 & -3 \\ \end{array}\right], \qquad B = \left[\begin{array}{cc} 5 & 7 \\ -3 & -4 \\ \end{array}\right]\text{.}

  1. Find the eigenvalues of AA. To which of the six types does the system xk+1=Axk\xvec_{k+1}=A\xvec_{k} belong?

  2. Using the eigenvalues of AA, we can write A=PEP−1A=PEP^{-1} for some matrices EE and PP. What is the matrix EE and what geometric effect does multiplication by EE have on vectors in the plane?

  3. If we remember that Ak=PEkP−1A^k = PE^kP^{-1}, determine the smallest positive value of kk for which Ak=IA^k=I.

  4. Find the eigenvalues of BB.

  5. Find a matrix EE such that B=PEP−1B = PEP^{-1} for some matrix PP. What geometric effect does multiplication by EE have on vectors in the plane?

  6. Determine the smallest positive value of kk for which Bk=IB^k=I.
