Back to Gaussian elimination revisited

Exercise 8

Avg difficulty 2.5

In the LULU factorization of a matrix, the diagonal entries of LL are all 11 while the diagonal entries of UU are not necessarily 11. This exercise will explore that observation by considering the matrix A=[311−6−4−10−41]A = \left[\begin{array}{rrr} 3 & 1 & 1 \\ -6 & -4 & -1 \\ 0 & -4 & 1 \\ \end{array}\right].

  1. Perform Gaussian elimination without partial pivoting to find UU, an upper triangular matrix that is row equivalent to AA.

  2. The diagonal entries of UU are called pivots. Explain why det⁡A\det A equals the product of the pivots.

  3. What is det⁡A\det A for our matrix AA?

  4. More generally, if we have PA=LUPA=LU, explain why det⁡A\det A equals plus or minus the product of the pivots.
