Back to Orthogonal complements and the matrix transpose

Activity 6.2.5

Avg difficulty 2.5
  1. Suppose that WW is a 55-dimensional subspace of R9\real^9 and that AA is a matrix whose columns form a basis for WW; that is, Col(A)=W\col(A) = W.

    1. What is the shape of AA?

    2. What is the rank of AA?

    3. What is the shape of ATA^T?

    4. What is the rank of ATA^T?

    5. What is dim⁡Nul(AT)\dim\nul(A^T)?

    6. What is dim⁡W⊥\dim W^\perp?

    7. How are the dimensions of WW and W⊥W^\perp related?

  2. Suppose that WW is a subspace of R4\real^4 having basis w1=[102−1],w2=[−12−63].\wvec_1 = \fourvec102{-1},\hspace{24pt} \wvec_2 = \fourvec{-1}2{-6}3.

    1. Find the dimensions dim⁡W\dim W and dim⁡W⊥\dim W^\perp.

    2. Find a basis for W⊥W^\perp. It may be helpful to know that the Sage command A.right_kernel() produces a basis for Nul(A)\nul(A).

    3. Verify that each of the basis vectors you found for W⊥W^\perp are orthogonal to the basis vectors for WW.
