Back to Orthogonal complements and the matrix transpose

Exercise 10

Avg difficulty 2.5

Given an m×nm\times n matrix AA, the row space of AA is the column space of ATA^T; that is, Row(A)=Col(AT)\row(A) = \col(A^T).

  1. Suppose that AA is a 7×157\times 15 matrix. For what pp is Row(A)\row(A) a subspace of Rp\real^p?

  2. How can this proposition help us describe Row(A)⊥\row(A)^\perp?

  3. Suppose that A=[−1−22124−151203]A = \begin{bmatrix} -1 & -2 & 2 & 1 \\ 2 & 4 & -1 & 5 \\ 1 & 2 & 0 & 3 \end{bmatrix}. Find bases for Row(A)\row(A) and Row(A)⊥\row(A)^\perp.
