Exercise 4

Avg difficulty 2.5

Determine whether the following statements are true or false and explain your reasoning.

  1. If A=[2111−31]A=\begin{bmatrix} 2 & 1 \\ 1 & 1 \\ -3 & 1 \end{bmatrix}, then x=[4−51]\xvec=\threevec{4}{-5}1 is in Col(A)⊥\col(A)^\perp.

  2. If AA is a 2×32\times3 matrix and BB is a 3×43\times4 matrix, then (AB)T=ATBT(AB)^T = A^TB^T is a 4×24\times2 matrix.

  3. If the columns of AA are v1\vvec_1, v2\vvec_2, and v3\vvec_3 and ATx=[201]A^T\xvec = \threevec{2}01, then x\xvec is orthogonal to v2\vvec_2.

  4. If AA is a 4×44\times 4 matrix with rank⁡(A)=3\rank(A) = 3, then Col(A)⊥\col(A)^\perp is a line in R4\real^4.

  5. If AA is a 5×75\times 7 matrix with rank⁡(A)=5\rank(A) = 5, then rank⁡(AT)=7\rank(A^T) = 7.
