Back to Orthogonal complements and the matrix transpose

Exercise 7

Avg difficulty 2.5

If AA is a square matrix, remember that the characteristic polynomial of AA is det⁡(A−λI)\det(A-\lambda I) and that the roots of the characteristic polynomial are the eigenvalues of AA.

  1. Explain why AA and ATA^T have the same characteristic polynomial.

  2. Explain why AA and ATA^T have the same set of eigenvalues.

  3. Suppose that AA is diagonalizable with diagonalization A=PDP−1A=PDP^{-1}. Explain why ATA^T is diagonalizable and find a diagonalization.
