Exercise 2

Avg difficulty 2.5

Consider the vectors w1=[111],w2=[−101],w3=[1−21].\wvec_1=\threevec111,\hspace{24pt} \wvec_2=\threevec{-1}01,\hspace{24pt} \wvec_3=\threevec1{-2}1.

  1. Explain why these vectors form an orthogonal basis for R3\real^3.

  2. Suppose that A=[w1w2w3]A=\begin{bmatrix} \wvec_1 & \wvec_2 & \wvec_3 \end{bmatrix} and evaluate the product ATAA^TA. Why is this product a diagonal matrix and what is the significance of the diagonal entries?

  3. Express the vector b=[−3−63]\bvec=\threevec{-3}{-6}3 as a linear combination of w1\wvec_1, w2\wvec_2, and w3\wvec_3.

  4. Multiply the vectors w1\wvec_1, w2\wvec_2, w3\wvec_3 by appropriate scalars to find an orthonormal basis u1\uvec_1, u2\uvec_2, u3\uvec_3 of R3\real^3.

  5. If Q=[u1u2u3]Q=\begin{bmatrix} \uvec_1 & \uvec_2 & \uvec_3 \end{bmatrix}, find the matrix product QQTQQ^T and explain the result.
