Exercise 5

Avg difficulty 2.5

Suppose that w=[2−12]\wvec=\threevec2{-1}2 defines a line LL in R3\real^3.

  1. Find the orthogonal projections of the vectors [100]\threevec100, [010]\threevec010, [001]\threevec001 onto LL.

  2. Find the matrix P=1∣w∣2wwTP = \frac{1}{\len{\wvec}^2} \wvec \wvec^T.

  3. Use this proposition to explain why the columns of PP are related to the orthogonal projections you found in the first part of this exercise.
