Exercise 7

Avg difficulty 2.5

Determine whether the following statements are true or false and explain your thinking.

  1. If the columns of QQ form an orthonormal basis for a subspace WW and w\wvec is a vector in WW, then QQTw=wQQ^T\wvec = \wvec.

  2. An orthogonal set of vectors in R8\real^8 can have no more than 8 vectors.

  3. If QQ is a 7×57\times5 matrix whose columns are orthonormal, then QQT=I7QQ^T = I_7.

  4. If QQ is a 7×57\times5 matrix whose columns are orthonormal, then QTQ=I5Q^TQ = I_5.

  5. If the orthogonal projection of b\bvec onto a subspace WW satisfies b^=0\bhat = \zerovec, then b\bvec is in W⊥W^\perp.
