Exercise 9

Avg difficulty 2.5

Explain why the following statements are true.

  1. If QQ is an orthogonal matrix, then det⁡Q=±1\det Q = \pm 1.

  2. If QQ is a 8×48\times 4 matrix whose columns are orthonormal, then QQTQQ^T is an 8×88\times8 matrix whose rank is 4.

  3. If b^\bhat is the orthogonal projection of b\bvec onto a subspace WW, then b−b^\bvec-\bhat is the orthogonal projection of b\bvec onto W⊥W^\perp.
