Exercise 4

Avg difficulty 2.5

Consider the vectors v1=[1−1−111],v2=[214−42],v3=[5−4−371]\vvec_1=\fivevec1{-1}{-1}11,\hspace{24pt} \vvec_2=\fivevec2{1}{4}{-4}2,\hspace{24pt} \vvec_3=\fivevec5{-4}{-3}71 and the subspace WW of R5\real^5 that they span.

  1. Find an orthonormal basis for WW.

  2. Find the 5×55\times5 matrix that projects vectors orthogonally onto WW.

  3. Find b^\bhat, the orthogonal projection of b=[−83−128−4]\bvec=\fivevec{-8}3{-12}8{-4} onto WW.

  4. Express b^\bhat as a linear combination of v1\vvec_1, v2\vvec_2, and v3\vvec_3.
