Exercise 6

Avg difficulty 2.5

Suppose that AA is a matrix with linearly independent columns and having the factorization A=QRA=QR. Determine whether the following statements are true or false and explain your thinking.

  1. It follows that R=QTAR=Q^TA.

  2. The matrix RR is invertible.

  3. The product QTQQ^TQ projects vectors orthogonally onto Col(A)\col(A).

  4. The columns of QQ are an orthogonal basis for Col(A)\col(A).

  5. The orthogonal complement Col(A)⊥=Nul(QT)\col(A)^\perp = \nul(Q^T).
