Exercise 2

Avg difficulty 2.5

Consider the matrix A=[122212221]A = \begin{bmatrix} 1 & 2 & 2 \\ 2 & 1 & 2 \\ 2 & 2 & 1 \\ \end{bmatrix} whose eigenvalues are λ1=5\lambda_1=5, λ2=−1\lambda_2=-1, and λ3=−1\lambda_3 = -1.

  1. Explain why AA is orthogonally diagonalizable.

  2. Find an orthonormal basis for the eigenspace E5E_5.

  3. Find a basis for the eigenspace E−1E_{-1}.

  4. Now find an orthonormal basis for E−1E_{-1}.

  5. Find matrices DD and QQ such that A=QDQTA=QDQ^T.
