Exercise 4

Avg difficulty 2.5

Suppose that AA is an m×nm\times n matrix and that B=ATAB=A^TA.

  1. Explain why BB is orthogonally diagonalizable.

  2. Explain why v⋅(Bv)=∣Av∣2\vvec\cdot(B\vvec) = \len{A\vvec}^2.

  3. Suppose that u\uvec is an eigenvector of BB with associated eigenvalue λ\lambda and that u\uvec has unit length. Explain why λ=∣Au∣2\lambda = \len{A\uvec}^2.

  4. Explain why the eigenvalues of BB are nonnegative.

  5. If CC is the covariance matrix associated to a demeaned dataset, explain why the eigenvalues of CC are nonnegative.
