Exercise 8

Avg difficulty 2.5

Determine whether the following statements are true or false and explain your thinking.

  1. If AA is an invertible, orthogonally diagonalizable matrix, then so is A−1A^{-1}.

  2. If λ=2+i\lambda=2+i is an eigenvalue of AA, then AA cannot be orthogonally diagonalizable.

  3. If there is a basis for Rm\real^m consisting of eigenvectors of AA, then AA is orthogonally diagonalizable.

  4. If u\uvec and v\vvec are eigenvectors of a symmetric matrix associated to eigenvalues -2 and 3, then u⋅v=0\uvec\cdot\vvec=0.

  5. If AA is a square matrix, then u⋅(Av)=(Au)⋅v\uvec\cdot(A\vvec) = (A\uvec)\cdot\vvec.
