Exercise 2

Avg difficulty 2.5

Suppose we would like to find the best quadratic function β0+β1x+β2x2=y\beta_0 + \beta_1x + \beta_2x^2=y fitting the points (0,1),(1,0),(2,1.5),(3,4),(4,8).(0,1), (1,0), (2,1.5), (3,4), (4,8).

  1. Set up a linear system Ax=bA\xvec = \bvec describing the coefficients x=[β0β1β2]\xvec = \threevec{\beta_0}{\beta_1}{\beta_2}.

  2. Find the singular value decomposition of AA.

  3. Use the singular value decomposition to find the least-squares approximate solution x^\xhat.
