16.6 Exercise 30

Avg difficulty 2.5

Given the wave functions y1(x,t)=Asin(kx−ωt)y_{1} \left(x , t\right) = A \text{sin} \left(k x - \omega t\right) and y2(x,t)=Asin(kx−ωt+ϕ)y_{2} \left(x , t\right) = A \text{sin} \left(k x - \omega t + \phi\right) with ϕ≠π2\phi \neq \frac{\pi}{2}, show that y1(x,t)+y2(x,t)y_{1} \left(x , t\right) + y_{2} \left(x , t\right) is a solution to the linear wave equation with a wave velocity of v=ωk.v = \frac{\omega}{k} .
