Back to Curvature

Exercise 13

Avg difficulty 2.5

In this exercise we verify the curvature formula κ=∥r⃗′(t)×r⃗′′(t)∥∥r⃗′(t)∥3.\begin{gathered} \kappa = \frac{\vecmag{\vr'(t) \times \vr''(t)}}{\vecmag{\vr'(t) }^3}. \end{gathered}

  1. Explain why ∥r⃗′(t)∥=dsdt.\begin{gathered} \vecmag{\vr'(t)} = \frac{ds}{dt}. \end{gathered}

  2. Use the fact that T⃗(t)=r⃗′(t)∥r⃗′(t)∥\vT(t) = \frac{\vr'(t)}{\vecmag{\vr'(t)}} and ∥r⃗′(t)∥=dsdt\vecmag{\vr'(t)} = \frac{ds}{dt} to explain why r⃗′(t)=dsdtT⃗(t).\begin{gathered} \vr'(t) = \frac{ds}{dt} \vT(t). \end{gathered}

  3. The Product Rule shows that r⃗′′(t)=d2sdt2T⃗(t)+dsdtT⃗′(t).\begin{gathered} \vr''(t) = \frac{d^2s}{dt^2} \vT(t) + \frac{ds}{dt} \vT'(t). \end{gathered} Explain why r⃗′(t)×r⃗′′(t)=(dsdt)2(T⃗(t)×T⃗′(t)).\begin{gathered} \vr'(t) \times \vr''(t) = \left(\frac{ds}{dt}\right)^2 (\vT(t) \times \vT'(t)). \end{gathered}

  4. In Key Idea on T⃗\vT and N⃗\vN we showed that ∥T⃗(t)∥=1\vecmag{\vT(t)} = 1 implies that T⃗(t)\vT(t) is orthogonal to T⃗′(t)\vT'(t) for every value of tt. Explain what this tells us about ∥T⃗(t)×T⃗′(t)∥\vecmag{\vT(t) \times \vT'(t)} and conclude that ∥r⃗′(t)×r⃗′′(t)∥=(dsdt)2∥T⃗′(t)∥.\begin{gathered} \vecmag{\vr'(t) \times \vr''(t)} = \left(\frac{ds}{dt}\right)^2 \vecmag{\vT'(t)}. \end{gathered}

  5. Finally, use the fact that κ=∥T⃗′(t)∥∥r⃗′(t)∥\kappa = \frac{\vecmag{\vT'(t)} }{\vecmag{\vr'(t)}} to verify that κ=∥vr′(t)×r⃗′′(t)∥∥r⃗′(t)∥3.\begin{gathered} \kappa = \frac{\vecmag{vr'(t) \times \vr''(t) }}{\vecmag{\vr'(t)}^3}. \end{gathered}
